  The Key Accountabilities of the role are as follows; · To prepare CAD/Hand drawings and develop concept, feasibility and design proposals to meet business objectives. · To provide cost effective, fit for purpose and value for money architectural technical and technical design service to internal and external clients and in accordance with efficiency targets. · To establish, maintain and improve cost effective ‘corporate’ design standards for new build and renewals works having due regard to the particular requirements of company standards and policies and heritage designations where these apply. · To proactively participate as a member of integrated design and construction teams in the delivery of projects. · To proactively participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary design team inputting the designs and specifications of each discipline into the detailed design documentation. · To assist the Senior Architect/Designer, Architect/Designer and Senior Architectural Technician in order to secure smooth and successful consents and approvals. · To review third-party technical design proposals for works to Network Rail’s assets. Essential · Degree or Diploma in architectural technology or relevant technical discipline (building surveying or engineering) · Excellent design and presentational skills, including use of CAD, DTP, Powerpoint and freehand drafting (AutoCAD LT/Full 06 preferred) · Conversant with Building Regulations, Planning and Consents processes· Construction Design Management (CDM) Awareness· Experienced in the use of NBS or other similar specification packages Desirable · Membership of a professional body (ABIAT/MBIAT)· Broad knowledge of the railways and railway architecture/engineering· Previous experience working on heritage buildings including liaison with local planning authorities, English Heritage, CADW and Historic Scotland and CABE· Knowledge of heritage legislation· Experienced in use of 3D Studio Max/Sketch up

  Your expertise as a Project Engineer (Signalling) will enable you to implement Network Rail systems and procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to relevant projects. Your experience will enable you to liaise with regulators and others as appropriate. A key part of this role will be to monitor specific projects managed by Infrastructure Investment so that they are engineered to the standards and specification of Network Rail. You must have an ability to manage all engineering activities so that they result in schemes that are affordable and meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

The successful candidate will monitor design and specialist consultants and contractors, providing project management advice in respect of all construction activities, including testing and commissioning and site supervision. You will have the ability to manage elements of relevant projects to meet the requirements of current legislation, including construction design management regulations.   The successful candidate should have experience of delivering multi-disciplinary re-signalling projects. Additionally the candidate should have excellent communication skills in order to manage the interdisciplinary issues associated with schemes and in order to undertake the line management of project engineering staff. The detailed job description of a Senior Project Engineer can be summarised as follows: -

1. Implement Network Rail systems and procedures to deliver a cost effective, high quality and safe approach to design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on relevant projects. Review all relevant legislation and liaise with relevant governmental departments.
2. Monitor the competence of all Project Engineers working on projects within the functional discipline and provide functional guidance, direction and briefing.
3. Apply engineering controls and procedures to all projects and check whether all design and construction contracts include reference to appropriate Railway Group and Network Rail Company standards applicable to their discipline.
4. Apply relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to all projects and check whether the environmental aspects of all projects are managed in accordance with Network Rail Environmental Policy.
5. Monitor all projects for compliance with Railway Group and Network Rail Company standards and Network Rail project control procedures.
6. Advise project and programme management in respect of all construction activities, testing and commissioning, and site supervision. Monitor whether the design and construction elements meet the requirements of legislation, including construction, design management (CDM) regulations.
7. Assure whether contractors’ design, construction and specialist personnel are competent.
8. Undertake reviews of design and construction activities. Arrange audits of contractors to monitor whether safety and quality of design, construction testing and commissioning and management systems are adequate.
9. Undertake the duties of Designated Project Engineer / Project Engineer.
10. Undertake accident investigations when remitted to by the relevant designated competent person.
